CHANGE BRAKE PADS

BASIC INORMATION FOR CHANGING YOUR FRONT BRAKE PADS

Front pads are used in this example.

Park your vehicle on a solid level surface.

Apply the parking brake and chock the rear wheels.

Using your jack, lift the front of your vehicle, (the owner’s manual will show you where the recommended jacking location are).

For your safety secure the vehicle with axle stands on both sides (if possible) before starting any work. (the pinch welds and the frame are two of the best locations)

It is advisable that you do not rely on the jack to hold the vehicle while you are working.

If your vehicle is equipped with hub caps (plastic covers over the wheels), these will need to be removed to access the lug nuts.

Remove the front wheels by removing the wheel nuts that are securing them.

To do this you will need to find the correct size socket and ratchet, turn it counter clockwise to loosen the nuts.

Locate the brake calliper and remove the brake calliper mounting bolts or pins.

Swivel the calliper up and away from the brake disc and working area.

Make sure you do not kink or damage any of the brake lines. Do not disconnect the brake line.

Remove the existing brake pads and lift out any anti squeal shims that may be present.

Press the calliper piston back into the housing.

Install the new brake pads into the calliper in reverse of how you removed the old pads.

If you have shims you should spray anti-squeak lubricant on the back before installation.

Install the callipers back onto the brake disc and tighten the calliper bolts to the manufacture specification.

Press the brake pedal to move the piston outward.

Install the wheel and tighten the wheel nuts to the manufacturer’s specification in a star pattern.

Repeat steps for the other side.

Remove jack stands and lower vehicle to the ground.

Check the brake fluid level in the master cylinder and add fluid if necessary.

Check that you have a solid brake pedal when you depress, drive your vehicle at 15mph increments and apply the brakes 2 to 4 times to break in the new pads.

Road test vehicle and break in new pads.
